Global Distribution and Location
- Mango (*Mangifera indica* L.) is commercially grown between 37°N and 33°S latitude, spanning tropical and subtropical regions on every continent
- India dominates world production, contributing with about 46% of global output. Other leading producers include China, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, Mexico, Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, and Nigeria.
- In Europe, Sicily has emerged as the leading production hub, with cultivated area expanding from just 10 hectares in 2004 to over 1,200 hectares today, driven by a warming Mediterranean climate.

 Potential of the Crop
- Mango represents roughly half of total global exotic fruit production, reflecting strong and growing consumer demand.
- Expanding cultivation into non-traditional Mediterranean areas like Sicily offers economic upside: growers report selling mangoes at €3–5/kg versus a fraction of that for traditional citrus, making tropical fruit substantially more profitable per hectare.[8][5]
- Climate change, while a threat to traditional Mediterranean crops, is opening new agroecological niches for mango, positioning it as a diversification and adaptation strategy for growers in marginal citrus zones.[4][8]

Key Criticalities
Around 400 pest species and numerous fungal pathogens affect mango worldwide; anthracnose, powdery mildew, bacterial canker, mango malformation, scab, and sooty mould are the most economically significant diseases.
Mango Tree Sudden Decline**, caused primarily by *Ceratocystis fimbriata* and insect vectors, is an emerging global threat causing rapid, often irreversible tree death. - **Fruit flies and seed weevils cause direct fruit damage and quality losses, complicating both field management and export phytosanitary compliance.
Sunburn** is the leading fruit-quality threat during Mediterranean summers, requiring protective netting or shading systems.

Mango nutrient management must follow the phenological cycle, shifting emphasis from nitrogen-driven vegetative growth in young trees to a balanced N-P-K-Ca-Mg regime that supports flowering, fruit set, and fruit quality in mature, bearing trees.

  • High fruit quality standards require using potassium sulfate (SOP) instead of muriate of potash during fruit-filling, as potassium drives fruit size, weight, and overall finish, while chloride from muriate can cause damage.

  • Soil application or fertigation is ideal for supplying most macronutrients like nitrogen, whereas micronutrients yield the best results when applied as foliar sprays during flowering.

  • Researchers are actively studying nano-micronutrient formulations to boost nutrient efficiency and lower required application rates, supporting the development of precision agriculture.

Nano.T Total .
