At a global level, extensive crops play a crucial role in food security. Total production is necessarily increasing, and at the top of the list are, in order: corn, wheat, and rice. Non-cereal crops also play an important role, such as oilseeds — primarily soybeans — and legumes such as beans, chickpeas, and peas.
In Italy, the most widespread crop is wheat, both durum and soft; corn remains a strategic crop, although it has declined in terms of cultivated area, while oilseed and legume crops are on the rise. Among the latter, it is worth noting that Italy has become the second-largest producer of chickpeas.
These elements are only indicative, as there is extreme variability due to multiple factors, generally of an international nature.
