Improve potato yield by promoting tuberification and tuber uniformity
The early tuberification phase of the potato represents one of the key moments in determining yield, size and final crop quality. Targeted nutritional management at this stage allows for maximizing the number of tubers and ensuring their uniform development.
We are currently in the central stages of the potato cycle, between the beginning of tuberification or the beginning of tuber enlargement, depending on the varietal cycle (early or late) and the sowing time.
BEGINNING OF POTATO TUBERIFICATION: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CROP
At this stage, the underground stolons begin to swell at the tips, forming tubers, the plant's reserve organs. This process is regulated by genetic, environmental and nutritional factors. The availability of carbohydrates and nutrients becomes crucial in stimulating the formation and differentiation of tubers.
At the same time:
- the number of tubers per plant is defined;
- the foundations for uniformity and commercial size are laid;
- increases sensitivity to water and nutritional stresses, which can compromise yield and quality.
NUTRITION OBJECTIVES IN THE TUBERIFICATION PHASE
✅ Promote the genetic expression of the crop
The correct supply of phosphorus and specific organic matrices stimulate the formation of a high number of tubers, improving production potential
✅ Support photosynthesis and dry matter accumulation
Nitrogen, magnesium, and potassium promote the translocation of sugars to the tubers, promoting their enlargement.
✅ Improve tuber quality and uniformity
Targeted nutrition allows you to obtain:
- greater uniformity of caliber
- higher dry matter content
- resistant peel and fewer physiological defects
Potassium, in particular, is the key element for yield and quality, contributing to sugar transport and final tuber quality.
NUTRITION AND STRESS MANAGEMENT: A DECISIVE FACTOR
Beginning of tuberification and swelling are phases extremely sensitive to abiotic stresses (heat, drought, water imbalances). Even short periods of water shortage can compromise the number and shape of tubers. Balanced nutrition: improves the plant's resistance to stress optimizes water balance allows for regular and continuous growth of tubers.
nutritional STRATEGY FOR POTATO
To achieve high yields and uniform production, it is essential to intervene in the tuberification phase with specific products capable of supporting the physiology of the plant, optimizing nutrient absorption and ensuring quality and shelf life of the final product
