Kiwi: How to improve the size without compromising the fruit's shelf life?
Today, fruit growers face a double challenge: meeting the demand for large, uniform sizes (premium calibers) without compromising their shelf life, which is essential for long journeys to foreign markets.
In addition to feeding the paint to achieve proper shoot development, it is important to pay attention to climatic conditions, which during this period are often characterized by temperature changes that can cause uneven and scalar bud development. For these situations, the use of biostimulants with anti-stress action is essential and to ensure that the plant overcomes critical issues without stunting.
PRE-FLOWERING AND ATTACHMENT: THE HEART OF PRODUCTION
The pre-flowering and fruit set stages of actinidia decide the production potential of the year. In particular, in post-fruit set (from petal fall), the plant focuses on cell division. Intervening with the right nutrition in this time window means determining the number of cells that will make up the fruit. The more cells form today, the larger and more consistent the kiwi will be tomorrow.
AT this stage we recommend in particular CRISCO, a product formulated to promote cell division, which guarantees larger fruits with a homogeneous size. 👉 [Learn more about CRISCO here]
HOW TO OBTAIN "FULL" AND RESISTANT FRUIT?
To increase the size while preserving shelf life and organoleptic quality, the strategy must be based on three key points:
- Support in critical stages (such as flowering and fruit set) with specific action products: In pre-flowering, natural amino acids and hormone precursors are needed to reduce metabolic stress and promote fruit set.
- Meso and microelement input: Kiwi requires high amounts of iron and calcium, for adequate plant development and to strengthen cell walls and improve shelf life.
- Nitrogen-Potassium balance: to obtain a good qualitative-quantitative yield, nitrogen deficiencies or excesses must be avoided (particularly in the final stages). Potassium is a key element in increasing flavor and dry matter in fruits.
The Nutrition Strategy: Kiwi Technical Line
To support producers, we studied a synergy of specific products for each phenological phase:
1. Vegetative Recovery (Fertigation)
- HydroStar BTC (10 Kg/ha) to "awaken" the plant by stimulating the root system
2. From Vegetative Development to Pre-flowering
- In Fertigation: Calcito (10 l/ha) which improves nutrient absorption and soil fertility
- Foliar: Giove Bio Gold (2.5 kg/ha) + Febo Mix (2 kg/ha) + Leaf P-Ca (4 l/ha)
3. Pre-flowering and Attachment (foliar)
- Vigorgreen (1.5 l/ha) + Naturblack (1 l/ha) to stimulate abundant flowering and subsequent fruit set
4. Post-fruit set
- Crisco (1 l/ha): when petals fall and after 10-15 days.
