Post-harvest management of stone fruit: the crucial time for replenishing nutrient reserves
The post-harvest phase is a crucial stage in the production cycle of stone fruit. Having supported the development and ripening of the fruit, the plant must replenish its energy and nutrient reserves in preparation for the following season. During this period, the leaves and roots continue to work actively, accumulating essential elements that will be crucial for vegetative regrowth and flowering the following year.
A balanced post-harvest nutrient regime promotes the storage of nitrogen and potassium, which are essential for the plant’s recovery and the build-up of reserves. At the same time, phosphorus, potassium and micro-nutrients such as boron and zinc contribute to the proper development of buds and the strengthening of the root system.
Taking action whilst the foliage is still active helps the orchard cope better with the winter period and creates the ideal conditions for vigorous vegetative regrowth, uniform flowering and high yields in the following growing season.
The post-harvest phase is therefore crucial for preparing the tree for high yields the following year.
